Flying ants, or carpenter ants with wings, for example, have such a bad press that we often run screaming before we realize what we are doing.
A flying ant is not that bad really, it is just our misunderstanding of this tiny creature which is at fault for sure.
Some of these types are dangerous of course. The fire, army and bullet variety are three of the most feared, and for good reason.
However, not all are bad and this should be noted when we find them around the place. Indeed, these creatures are so hardy that they are on every continent in the world except the top and bottom ones which are much too cold for them to survive.
It may seem, to the uninformed, that these creatures follow humans wherever they go. This is completely wrong, of course, but they do come into our homes looking for food and water which is usually in good supply.
The odd crumb or droplet of water is enough to keep one of these creatures going for a long time and who among us could say that we do not leave even one crumb about the place?
The carpenter variety is probably one of the most misunderstood of this species since we often think that they eat the wood in our homes, much like termites. This is completely wrong since it is the termite that eats the cellulose in the wood.
The carpenter variety merely makes holes and ‘galleries for the rest of the colony to live in so, in fact, it is just excavating a home out of our precious wood.
Since they actually eat termites, these creatures could be saving the home from total destruction since not many termites will venture into a place that has the carpenter at work.
This could be implied then that they are actually protecting the home while they do minimal damage. Indeed, if there is a colony in residence, there are usually no more than about four thousand in situ.
This variety sometimes has wings though, but these only stay on for a few days. The only reason that they go through this process is so that a new colony can be set up somewhere else quite quickly.
The queen and her consort, and all the other underlings, will have to move quickly to set up home somewhere else and that is why pairs of wings are often found in abundance once the new home has been set up.
Of course, whenever anyone sees this kind of infestation they immediately think that it represents dirt or disease.
On the contrary, they do not carry disease at all, with the exception of the Argentine variety, so there is no need to worry on that score.
However, it usually takes the professionals to come in and spray all cracks and crevices if the pesky little creatures are to be sent packing from our homes.
